Trenchless technology is a type of subsurface construction work that involves the installation, replacement or renewal of underground utilities but requires few trenches or no continuous trenches. Because it is trenchless, this type of work causes minimum excavation and surface disruption. It is a rapidly growing sector of the construction and civil engineering industry.
This involves a steerable system for the installation of pipes, conduits and cables in a shallow arc or on grade using a surface or pit launched drilling rig.
Blackley Construction has wide-ranging experience in directional drilling solutions across the Manawatu and surrounding areas.
Tracking of the drill head can be from the surface or from down hole tooling. Drill fluids are used for cooling and lubrication.
Our directional drilling equipment is capable of installing pipe up to 500mm in diameter and 250m in length.
Pipe ramming involves driving a steel casing through the ground which is open-ended. Once it reaches the target the soil inside the pipe is cleaned out.
Blackley Construction has a Gigant Grundoram that is capable of driving diameters up to 700mm in suitable ground conditions. The Goliath Grundoram is capable of diameters up to 1.0m.
Range is dependent on ground conditions and pipe diameter but lengths of 40 to 50 metres are possible.
Thrusting is a simple method for installing small diameter services or short lengths. An air powered impact tool forces its way through the ground towing the service pipe behind it.
We operate 4 thrusting tools which cater for pipe sizes up to 110mm diameter. Length is dependent on ground conditions – 15 to 20 metres is achievable.
Thrusting is a suitable option for installing water lines, sewer services (depending on grade required), gas line replacements and communication ducts.
In one process Blackley Construction can Auger bore a hole, remove the spoil and jack in a pipe.
This method is suitable for short lengths and is very suitable for hard ground or where special pipes need to be installed.
We can install diameters up to 1.2m with this method in certain ground conditions.
Because this is a relatively new technology, which is rapidly developing, we have developed a presentation that introduces the range of operations covered by the discipline of Trenchless Technology.
The presentation is made up by our General Manager and includes as much up to date information from overseas conferences and recent research as we can.
More than 20 of these presentations have been made for group sizes ranging from five to 60 people.
The presentation takes approximately two hours and is free providing air travel or overnight accommodation is not required.
